Your days are packed full of things to do, places to go, tasks to complete, and items to remember. Maybe you have kids, a hectic job, or maybe you’re caring for a sick parent.
We’re all busy.
I don’t know about you but when I used to hear people say “You have to take time for yourself” I just wanted to slap them silly. I wanted to say to them “I know that, but tell me… who’s going to (fill in the blank of one of my many responsibilities).”
Then I Learned a Little Trick That Made All the Difference.
A few years back I wasn’t working out regularly and I wasn’t eating the greatest food. I told myself (and others) that it was because I was too busy.
And it was the truth. Over time I gained a little weight, felt less energetic, and started to feel resentful of the long list of things to do.
What I really needed was “me” time. I always pictured myself taking a full day and going to the beach or maybe taking a few hours and going to see a movie.
The Problem Was I Rarely Had Hours of Free Time to Do Something So… Leisurely.
Would it have been a good thing? Yes. It would have given me some room to breathe and chill out, but the reality was I wasn’t going to take a chunk of my day and do these things. I had too many responsibilities to deal with between work and family.
So I learned to take the time I was already spending at home and turn that into “me” time. For instance, we all eat several meals per day and prepping those meals is often boring, tedious, and at best… annoying.
Since one of the things I wanted was to eat better, I decided to turn my meal prep into “me” time. So I started to listen to my favorite music, dance around while I was going from the sink to the island and back around to the refrigerator. Heck, I’ll get my son, Theo, into it as well sometimes. I pick meals that don’t take forever to prepare and leave me feeling like I’m the world’s worst chef.
Is This the End-All-Be-All of Taking Care of Yourself?
No. It isn’t, but it did give me more room to be me, breathe a little calmer, slow down, and have some fun. You see either way I had to make dinner. Why not make it more fun and lighten my mood?
Too often we make huge changes in our life and find they aren’t sustainable. It is the small actions, like the one I’m sharing here, that over time make the difference.
Add some music, dancing, and smiles to your meal prep and you’ll not only find that your mood brightens a bit, but you also look forward to making dinner or making your lunches for the week.
I doesn’t have to be dancing during meal prep. I’m sure there are hundreds of different tedious tasks you can liven up. Dance while sweeping the floors? Singing in the shower? Find the ways you can build in that “me” time.
Doing this takes no additional time, no additional money, and no additional effort from you. It just takes a little commitment to try it out for a week.
