“Do unto others as you would have them do to you.” – The Golden Rule
You’ve heard of the golden rule before, right? I learned it pretty early on in life. I would hear it on TV, from my parents, and other important role models.
It’s even found in most, if not all, world religions. It’s a pretty important rule.
But I’m not here to talk about other people. I’m here to talk about you. If we’re being honest, you treat others pretty well. You’re a great friend, spouse, parent, community member, etc. I didn’t say perfect so you can let go of that little voice that just said “I’m not that great.”
You treat others well. Period. I know you do.
But what about you?
You don’t get as much sleep as you’d like. You don’t eat as many vegetables as you’d like. You don’t get outside as often as you’d like. You don’t spend enough time laughing. You don’t have time for your interests anymore. You don’t really take care of yourself as much as you want.
So I propose we revisit the golden rule. Yes, it’s important to do unto others as we would have them do to us… but the buck stops here. You have to treat yourself as you treat others too.
I’m making the extreme suggestion that in order to treat others well… we must first start with treating ourselves well.
It’s kind of like when you ride on an airplane. The flight attendant always says that in the event of an emergency you should put your oxygen mask on first and then assist others.
This may be the point in the article where you roll your eyes and say something like, “Yeah. Yeah. Old news. I’ve heard this before.”
So let me ask you this. Would you treat your best friend, your spouse, or your children the way you treat yourself?
There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be healthy. Women in particular have a hard time putting themselves first, but it’s exactly what needs to be done.
When you aren’t at your best, you can’t give your best. It’s a law of life. If you’re out of energy, over-weight, bloated, or easily out of breathe it’s hard to imagine you’re living life to the fullest.
So what do I do about it?
This certainly isn’t meant to be a guilt trip. It’s meant to look at the golden rule in a new way. How can we possibly be our best when we put ourselves last? Taking the time to focus on you and your health goals is key to living your best life.
I want you to start putting yourself first sometimes. You’ll be a much happier version of yourself, which will spread to others around you.
